Description
Harmony Mills, located in Cohoes, New York, manufactured this printed cotton fabric sometime in the second half of the 19th century. The printed design features a grid of diamond shapes with a red and white circle, resembling a life-preserver ring, inside of each diamond. An original label, printed with an engraving of the Harmony Mills factory complex, is still attached to the reverse. The image of the mill prominently features two smokestacks billowing smoke – a symbol, at the time, of industrial prowess. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
