Description
Slater Mills, located in Webster, Massachusetts, screen printed this handkerchief design in 1932 to commemorate their company’s 140th anniversary. The design depicts the company’s original Rhode Island site, “Old Slater Mill,” at the center. Surrounding the mill are portraits of three of the company’s presidents: founder Samuel Slater in the upper left, his son and successor Horatio Nelson Slater in the upper right, and then-head of the company Horatio Nelson Slater III in the lower right. The lower left corner is conspicuously empty. The design is printed on rayon. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
