Description
New York-based artist Irene DeFoy Gregor designed and made this garter for her daughter’s wedding in 1975. Gregor was proficient in a variety of needlework from a young age, but had a particular interest in tatting, a type of craft done by tying thread into a series of small knots. Unable to find a garter she liked for the wedding, Gregor chose to make one herself, creating this delicate heart design. The garter is comprised of a strip of light blue elastic and a length of pale pink ribbon, which are threaded through a ring of tatted silk heart shapes. This is one of two identical garters Gregor made for the wedding – one for her daughter to wear, and another to be thrown during the ceremony. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
