Description
This printed cotton yardage was made in 1932 to commemorate the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth. The textile is plain weave cotton printed in black, red, white, and blue. The pattern has three wide bands of color: blue at the top, white in the center, and red at the bottom. In the center is a black and white bust of George Washington, which is outlined with a white line and extends into all three bands. In the blue band is the word “Washington” and in the red band is “Bicentennial / 1732-1932". The motif repeats in a row four times. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
