Description
Margaret LaCortiglia Cardinale, of Malden, Massachusetts, knit this fuchsia bedspread around the 1950s. The bedspread was made for a double bed and is comprised of hexagons with raised leaf patterns. The top edge is self-finished, while the sides and bottom have a ruffled edge attached, which was knitted separately. This bedspread took Cardinale five years to complete. The yarn she used was purchased at Revere Knitting Mills and was originally ecru, but the shades of the ruffled edge and body did not match, so Revere Mills dyed it this vibrant fuchsia color for her. Cardinale used the bedspread in her room with a white eyelet dust ruffle. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
