Description
This Jacquard woven silk portrait was created in 1932 to commemorate the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth. The picture, which appears to be based on Gilbert Stuart’s 1796 Lansdowne portrait of Washington, was designed by a “Butterworth” and manufactured by Rockledge Mills. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
