Description
Ann Elizabeth Brockman, a seamstress from Charlottesville, Virginia, wove this overshot coverlet in the 1850s. It is made of undyed cotton and wool along with brown wool. Handstitched seams join the three panels that make up the coverlet. The overshot pattern, sometimes called “Jefferson's Beauty,” is composed of a grid of square and diamond motifs. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
