Description
Ann Elizabeth Brockman, a seamstress from Charlottesville, Virginia, wove this overshot coverlet in the 1850s. It is made of undyed cotton and gold and rose-colored wool. Seams join the three panels that make up the coverlet. The overshot pattern, sometimes called “Jefferson's Beauty,” is composed of a checkered rectangle framed by bands on the sides, top and bottom. A block with a diamond motif is at each intersection and contains four small squares in its corners. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
