Description
According to family history, this outfit was James Waller Brockman's (1862-1935) first suit of clothes. His mother, Ann Elizabeth Brockman, made the shirt and pants when James was between three and five years old. These "big boy clothes" replaced the dress or skirt that all babies and toddlers wore as very young children, a common practice that continued into the 20th century. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
