Description
This carpet bag was made sometime between 1825 and 1835. The design is woven from wool, with a white ground and a repeating cornucopia motif in green, red, gold, and blue. The central motif is flanked by vertical bars in similar shades of brown, green, and red. The top edge of the back folds down over the top and has two loops, which go around two metal buttons on the front to hold the bag closed. The interior is lined with plain weave, printed cotton fabric with brown ground and a dark brown wave design. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
