Description
This “Calories” handkerchief was printed around 1945 to 1965 by Franshaw, Inc., a novelty handkerchief manufacturer based in the United States. The printed design depicts a variety of different foods and drinks, each labeled with how many calories they supposedly contain. While this handkerchief reflects 20th century diet culture and the rise of science-based thinking about health and nutrition, it is also considerably playful, featuring bright colors, cartoonish line art, and a box of bonbons with the label “DANGER” in place of a calorie count. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
