Description
This is a print block with an image of a parrot, used for printing on textiles. This block was designed by Samuel G. Cooper, a stamp and stencil designer in Lowell, Massachusetts, and manufactured by the New York company Yungmann & Schneider. The design is comprised of copper strips, arranged to create an image of a parrot, affixed to a wooden base. Maker information is inscribed on the sides of the block: on one side is stamped “SAML. G. COOPER. / MAKER / LOWELL, MASS.,” and on the other side is stamped “YUNGMANN & SCHNEIDER / M’FRS / 46 BEEKMAN ST. N.Y.C.” This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
