Description
The Boston Chemical Printing Company printed this cotton handkerchief around the mid-19th century. It is made of plain woven, undyed cotton and has handstitched hems on all sides. The printed design features the text of the Ten Commandments within an oval wreath, with large text above and below reading “Worship God and keep his Commandments.” Religion and morality were common themes in 19th century handkerchief designs; another kerchief in Winterthur’s collection (object 2017.0019.069.014), also by the Boston Chemical Printing Company, is printed with Sunday school hymns. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
