Description
The Boston Chemical Printing Company printed this cotton handkerchief around the early to mid-19th century. It is made of plain woven, off-white cotton and has handstitched hems on all sides. The printed design, titled “Sabbath School Hymns No. 2,” features the music and words for four hymns. Religion and morality were common themes in 19th century handkerchief designs; another kerchief in Winterthur’s collection (object 2017.0019.069.015), also by the Boston Chemical Printing Company, is printed with the Ten Commandments. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
