Description
This linen textile is printed with a silhouette portrait of New York politician DeWitt Clinton. The textile is a plain weave, undyed linen with four raw edges. The image, printed in off-white, grey, and black, depicts a full-length profile of Clinton, in silhouette, wearing a long coat and standing with his hands behind his back. A map labeled “Map of New York” is on the wall behind him. In the bottom left corner of the textile is printed text reading “No. 72” and a diamond logo containing block letters reading “Hiawatha.” This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
