Description
Textile manufacturer Greeff Fabrics produced this printed cotton yardage around the mid-20th century. The printed design depicts a fruit basket and appears to be a reproduction of a theorem painting, a type of stenciled painting usually done on velvet. This fabric is plain woven cotton, but a gray overlay is printed over the cream-colored background to imitate the texture of napped velvet. Printed text along the left selvedge edge reads ““Woods Hole” from the “Hospitality Collection,” © by Greeff, produced by Special Arrangement with the American Museum in Britain.”” This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
