Description
Henry Bowen’s Chemical Print, located in Boston, Massachusetts, printed this cotton handkerchief around 1852. The printed design, copied from a lithograph, shows an engraving of "Sailor’s Snug Harbor," a Massachusetts retirement home for elderly sailors. This handkerchief was evidently made to advertise the home, as the text above the engraving includes instructions for sending applications to the institution. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
