Description
This white, oval-shaped linen doily was made for the 1876 American Centennial Exposition. It was created by Irish linen manufacturers J. N. Richardson, Sons & Owden at either the firm’s location in Belfast, Ireland or on site at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The Jacquard woven designs on the doily include portraits of two presidents: Ulysses G. Grant – U.S. president at the time of the Centennial – on the right, and George Washington on the left. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
