Description
This is a Jacquard woven silk portrait, titled “La Famille Imperiale,” woven by Michel-Marie Carquillat and dated February 1858. Small text woven under the portrait indicates the design is a reproduction of an artwork, possibly a drawing or engraving, by artists “Saignemorte” and “Bruyas.” The portrait, woven from black and white silk thread, depicts French emperor Napoleon III seated next to his wife, Empress Eugénie, and their son, Prince Louis-Napoléon. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
