Description
The Lowell Hosiery Company, located in Lowell, Massachusetts, manufactured these knit cotton stockings sometime between 1869 and 1927. The stockings are tubular knit cotton with white and pink stripes near the leg openings. They were knit in one piece and seamed along the side of the foot, from the ankle down to the bottom of the foot below heel, and along the bottom of the heel. The openings of the stockings are turned over to create a band approximately 1 inch wide. All of the stitching is machine-made chain stitch. A Lowell Hosiery Company logo is stamped in blue ink on each stocking. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
