Description
This commemorative silk picture was designed and woven by Emil Dick, whose name can be seen near the bottom right corner. It was probably manufactured by Continental Mills in Lewiston, Maine between 1893 and 1922, though it may have been woven for the company by a different mill. The woven picture depicts the Continental Mills building, with text underneath reading “The Continental Mills,” “Manufacturers of Continental Sheetings, Twills, Lawns, Sateens, Jacquard & Dobby Weaving, Muslims & Momie Cloths, Coarse & Fine Yarns.” Following the continental theme, two small vignettes at the bottom corners depict colonial soldiers, and a small box contains an excerpt from the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem “Paul Revere’s Ride.” This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
