Description
This is a rug, or possibly carpet, fragment with a rug-within-a-rug design. It is made from Brussels woven jute and wool. The major motif is a rug-within-a-rug design, predominantly red, gold, brown, and green. There are two secondary motifs. One is a fancy star-like figure in red, tan, brown, black, and green. The other is a rectangular shape in red, blue, black, green, gold, and brown. The background is filled with scrolling vines, flowers, and trees in gold, brown, red, blue, and green on off-white. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
