Description
This is an early 19th-century cotton and linen towel with an overshot M’s and O’s pattern. It has a linen warp and a cotton weft. One edge has knotted self fringe, while the opposite edge is hemmed and has knotted fringe attached to it. The overshot pattern consists of bands containing two alternating designs: a checkerboard pattern and a horizontal stripe pattern. This towel may have been woven or owned by Frances Anne Smith, who lived in Smith’s Basin, Fort Ann, New York. The name “F. A. Smith” is inscribed in ink at one corner. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
