Description
This Jacquard woven picture, or Stevengraph, of the Lowell Textile Institute was created around 1940. It has a white rayon warp and a red and black rayon weft. The white and black threads appear gray together. The woven image depicts the outside of the Lowell Textile Institute’s (now called the University of Massachusetts Lowell) Southwick Hall building, with an American flag flying above it. The picture is framed by a red horizontal bar on the left and right ends. In the upper right corner of the picture, woven text reads “Lowell Textile Institute.” This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
