Description
This miniature cotton bale was created in 1896 by the Talladega College Agricultural Department as a souvenir for the 50th anniversary meeting of the American Missionary Association. The miniature, like its full-sized equivalent, consists of cotton wrapped in burlap netting and secured with metal bands. The bands on this miniature also hold a piece of paper with printed text reading “American Missionary Association / Jubilee Meeting, 1896. / Souvenir Cotton Bale / Grown and Packed by Agricultural Department / Talladega College, Alabama.” This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
