Description
This damask tablecloth was probably made in England around 1840. It has a red cotton warp and an undyed linen weft, which extend to create a 3-inch fringe on all four sides. The Jacquard woven design depicts a series of concentric floral wreaths, with a square floral border around the outer edge. This tablecloth once belonged to the donor's great-grandmother, who brought it with her from England when she came to the United States in the early 1840s. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
