Description
This is a machine-woven wool blanket embroidered with the name “Mrs. Abott Lawrence.” It was created around 1850. It is a 2/2 twill weave with two selvedge edges and two edges bound with silk tape. Most of the wool is undyed except for a border of 12 narrow stripes in red, blue, and yellow near each warp end. Abbott Lawrence (1792-1855) was the first president of the Pacific Mills textile corporation and namesake of the planned city of Lawrence, Massachusetts. Based on the date and embroidery, this blanket presumably belonged to his wife. It is one of a pair with 2017.0019.019.001. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
