Description
This 20th century faux fox pelt is in fact woven cotton, with an image of a fox printed in browns and greens at the center. The printed side is napped, meaning some of the fibers have been raised above the surface, giving the fabric a fuzzy texture. The design was most likely printed repeatedly on a long sheet and then cut into individual “pelts.” This particular example was not cut quite precisely, as part of the repeated pattern is visible along the left edge. This object is one of a large group transferred to Winterthur from the American Textile History Museum when it closed in 2017.
