Description
This hand carved wooden scoop has a very shallow, wedge-shaped bowl with a relatively flat bottom. The handle is vertical and positioned at a right angle to the bowl. Utilitarian household items made from wood are sometimes called treen or treenware, terms which come from the word tree. Many plates, bowls, and utensils used in colonial America were made from wood, and the utensils in particular carved by hand. Based on the shape of its bowl and position of the handle, it is possible this scoop was in fact a paddle meant for working butter. The maker and origin of this object is unknown.
