Description
Edward C. Moore's designs inspired by arts of Middle Eastern and Islamic cultures became synthesized as Tiffany’s "Persian" pattern, visible on this elegant cigar (segar) or smoking stand. The flat-chased and engraved arabesques and quatrefoil shapes enliven the simple geometry of the vase and gilded tray while alluding to ceramic and metalwork designs. Along with humidors, pocket cases, vesta match cases, and lighters cigar stands were suitable gifts for gentlemen as advertised in contemporary newspapers. This design incorporates the lighters as two removable lamps which facilitated communal smoking events. Masculine social rooms specifically designed for smoking in this era drew often upon a whimsical Turkish theme; this fashion extended to emerging Gilded Age men’s clubs and other spaces.
