Description
The original use of this bowl is difficult to pin down. It perhaps was employed as a small-sized punch bowl, a slop bowl accompanying tea wares, as an addition to settings on a dinner table, or perhaps all of the above. The object would have been suitable for use in the better rooms of a middling income home or tavern or in the less important rooms in a wealthier household. The inclusion of underglaze blue painted ornament on dipped ware of this period is fairly unusual and also is a feature of certain wares made by Staffordshire potter William Greatbatch.
