This is part of a shaft loom that was made in the late eighteenth century in Southeastern Pennsylvania and used there for over two hundred years. It is a handle, or toggle, that lets the weaver control the tension in the warp without getting up. By pressing on this handle, the weaver causes a lever to drop, releasing a ratchet on the warp beam and allowing the whole to roll forward.
