Description
A child's gown of cotton batiste with detailed embroidery and openwork on the bodice, sleeves and skirt. The bodice is constructed with a series of inserted panels which are adorned with embroidery and openwork and placed diagonally to create a striking visual pattern in the gown's center. The gown closes with two sets of drawstrings: one at the neck, the other at the waist. The cap sleeves are edged with eyelets. The back of the gown is plain, with the exception of a series of pintucks above the hem. This style of handwork (combining openwork and whitework) is known as broderie Anglaise. The style was popular during the late 19th century and early 20th century.
