Description
This gown is an example of an 18th century garment which has been altered with modern construction for use as a costume during the 20th or 21st century. The original gown was made from brocaded silk damask fabric (most likely woven in Spitalfields, England c. 1750) and lined with linen. The altered gown combines some of the original design elements, like an open skirt, worn with a visible petticoat underneath, with modern construction and new materials (1/4 wide nickel plated hooks and eyes to close a cotton "corset" and sheer organza silk lining) and vintage materials (handmade lace used on new flounces for the sleeves, corded chenille trim (appears to be from the 18th century or early 19th century) to frame a revised neckline that has also been trimmed with a flowing collar of machine made lace.
