Description
A gray silk bonnet, produced by the Shakers. The curved brim is shaped and supported with a curved piece of pasteboard. This is covered in gray silk along the exterior and lined with ivory silk along the interior of the bonnet. Lengths of gray silk ribbon, sewn to the front edges of the cap are designed to tie into a bow. The back of the cap is pleated and a thin band of gathered fabric creates a border around the cap. The interior of the back of the cap is lined in buckram (could be linen or cotton). A series of thick ruffles covers the neck underneath. The ruffles are stiffened with a lining of two layers of netting.The interior of the cap has a series of basting stitches (cream colored thread) at the brim.
