Construction Description
Presence of dirt beneath the engraving suggests box was decorated some time after it was made. Engraving was also colored at a later date. The presence of lead in pigments tested suggests a lead-based ground, while the appearance of zinc and barium together suggests the presence of lithopone, either mixed with a lead-based ground or used as a separate pigment. Lithopone was not commercially available before 1874.
