Freeman Porter is the younger brother of Allen, also a pewterer. Freeman joined in a partnership with Allen called A. and F. Porter in 1835, the same year he married Mary Ann (Buckley) Partridge). Allen retired in about 1840 and Elizur B. Forbes of Hartford became Freeman's foreman. The shop is listed in the 1860 New England Business Directory (Laughlin, vol.2, p.110). For more on Allen and Freeman Porters' marks, see C. Jordan Thorn, Handbook of American Silver and Pewter Marks (1949), p.273-274; Carl Jacobs, Guide to American Pewter (1957), p.147; Ebert, Collecting American Pewter (1973), p.140; and Montgomery, History of American Pewter (1973), p.226.
