Creator (Role)

Johann Jakob Frey I (Etcher)
1681-1752
Son of the sculptor in wood, Hans Heinrich Frey. Jakob Frey was greatly influenced by his teacher, Carlo Maratti, who drew his attention to the picturesque qualities of etching. He combined engraving and etching in most of his prints and is particularly known for his very precise and accurate reproductive engravings after 17th- and 18th-century Old Masters (notable examples are of the "Aurora" (1722) after Guido Reni and the "Flight into Egypt" (1735) after Maratti). The Zentralbibliothek in Lucerne houses the most complete collection of his graphic works. Frey was commissioned to design the ceiling fresco for the nave of St. Jost Church at Blatten, Lucerne. Nicolas Poussin (Painter)
1594-1665
Poussin was born into a family of some local distinction in Normandy, where he probably received early training in painting. He spent most of his formative years in Paris, and he then went to Italy by at least 1624. He was a popular and influential painter who successfully subordinated dramatic narrative and the expression of extreme states of human passions to the formal harmony of designs, which were based on the beauty and precision of abstract forms. His work epitomized the contemporary search for equilibrium and synthesis between the forces of the Classical and the Baroque around which most artistic critical debate in Rome was concentrated during the 1630s.
