Lawrence Langworthy (Maker)
1692-10/19/1739
Lawrence Langworthy is the earliest pewter-maker of verified record. He became a freeman in 1735, though he lived in Newport, Rhode Island as early as May, 1731. Pieces with the initials "LL" have been attributed to Langworthy on the grounds that no other pewterer with those initials is known in either England or America (Laughlin, vol.1, p.87-88 and vol.3, p.49). For more on Lawrence Langworthy's marks, see Carl Jacobs, Guide to American Pewter (1957), p.122-123 and Ebert, Collecting American Pewter (1973), p.135. See also C. Jordan Thorn, Handbook of American Silver and Pewter Marks (1949), p.265 and Laughlin, Pewter in America (1981), vol.1, p.87-88 and vol.3, p.49.
