Betsey S. McLaughlin was born on April 28, 1820, in Scarborough, Cumberland County, Maine. Scarborough is not far from Portland, and it is likely that either she or perhaps her teacher attended school there. Betsey's parents are Robert McLaughlin, born January 31, 1784 and Eleanor H. Clements, born May 26, 1791, and they were married on March 6, 1817. According to her sampler, Betsey had a sister, Sarah, born on June 18, 1827 and a brother, William, born on July 12, 1829.
