Leopold Gast, with his brother August, emigrated from Germany shortly after 1848. After working in New York City and Pittsburgh, they settled in St. Louis in 1852. In 1866 Leopold left the firm, which was thereafter known as August Gast & Co. By 1883 the firm was one of the largest lithographic houses in the West.
