Creator (Role)

Thomas Derby (Maker)
1786-1852
It seems that Thomas Derby was reponsible for leaking T.D. Boardman's formula for britannia. He trained in the shop of William Danforth. He was listed in the census for Middletown, Connecticut in 1810 and 1820 but probably traveled seasonally between Connecticut and the South. He worked for Josiah Danforthin 1821-1822 and for the Yales after that. He apparently worked for himself through the 1830's and worked with his son, Thomas Derby Jr for part of his career. For more on Thomas Derby's marks, see Kauffman, The American Pewterer (1970), p.140; Montgomery, History of American Pewter (1973), p.221; Ebert, Collecting American Pewter (1973), p.130; C.
