This shuttle came to Winterthur with a loom that has been used in southeastern Pennsylvania for over 200 years. Weavers throw shuttles back-and-forth across a fabric's warp in order to create the perpendicular weft. As weavers used their shuttles for years, they often decorated these tools with punch or scribed decorations.
