Gift of Catherine L. Bennett in memory of Claire deHart Lewis
Rebecca Deppen Price (Maker)
1840-1917
The needlework picture descended in the family of the maker, Rebecca Deppen Price (1841-1917). According to the donor (Catherine L. Bennett), Rebecca Price's maternal ancestors, the Deppen family, emigrated from Basel, Switzerland to America on the ship "The Princess Augusta" in 1736 and settled in Berks County. Rebecca, the fourth generation, was born in Berks County in 1841." She lived in Berks County while working this picture, and may have lived in Reading at that time. In 1867, Rebecca married John C. DeHart (1840-1912) in Reading, PA, where they resided for many years until moving into Philadelphia late in their lives. The youngest of their four children was the donor's maternal grandfather, J. Leon DeHart, who married Emily Catharine Christ of Pinegrove, Pennsylvania and resided in Narberth. The needlework descended to their daughter Claire Christ deHart (1926-2012) who requested that her daughter, Catherine DeHart Bennett offer the piece to Winterthur. A note written by the donor's mother indicated that the needlework was not completed until 1865; a tradition that must have come down through the family as Claire Christ DeHart never knew her grandmother.
