References: Earnest, Papers for Birth Dates, pp. 55-59. Bentz was known as the Mount Pleasant Artist until 1986, when the only signed work by him was discovered. Bentz's father was an itinerant farmer, joiner and itinerant Lutheran preacher (not an ordained pastor) who committed suicide in 1818. It is unclear whether Bentz was affiliated with any church, and he is one of a few fraktur artists who do not include religious verses on their certificates (he also rarely included birth and baptism location). He is also known for drawing clocks on his certificates.
