Bequest of Henry Francis du Pont
John Shoff (Maker)
John Shoff owned 150 acres in Bedford County by 1774 and was married in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1793. In 1779, 1781, and 1784, a blacksmith named John Shoff was taxed for property in West District Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Records exist for two John Shoffs who served in the Revolutionary Army (Laughlin, vol.2, p.64).
For an example of his mark, see Carl Jacobs, Guide to American Pewter (1957), p.158; however, Jacobs misreads the mark "I SHOFF" as "L SHOFF". Similarly, C. Jordan Thorn, in Handbook of American Silver and Pewter Marks (1949), identifies the maker as "I SHOFF", p.277. Montgomery, History of American Pewter (1973), p.227, gets it right.
