This circular die is one half of the set needed to stamp up a planchet or section of metal with an impression of Washington's portrait. It has a tradition of being designed and used to create a portion of the twentieth-century version of a Purple Heart medal, awarded for military service and sacrifice. The award was established by George Washington after the Revolutionary War.
