Bequest of Henry Francis du Pont
Eben Smith (Maker)
1814-1856
Smith may have originally practiced the craft of cabinetmaking before becoming a pewterer. He apparently trained in the latter craft in the shop of Israel Trask (Laughlin, p.113).

Jordan Thorn, Handbook of American Silver and Pewter Marks (1949), p.278; Ebert, Collecting American Pewter (1973), p.141; and Montgomery, History of American Petwer (1973), p.227. See also J.B. Kerfoot, American Pewter (1942), p.150.
