Creator (Role)

Benjamin Hurd (Maker)
1739-1781
Benjamin Hurd was the tenth of fourteen children born to Jacob and Elizabeth Hurd. He was apprenticed to his father, a well-known and successful silversmith in Boston. His brother Nathaniel, older by ten years, also learned the craft from their father. Both brothers became proficient silversmiths, Nathaniel for almost forty years, and Benjamin for about twenty years prior to his death in 1781. Jacob and Nathaniel are represented by a large body of silverwork. Benjamin, however, has left relatively little silver bearing his name. Only about eighteen objects are presently recorded that bear one of his three known marks; most is flatware, but two baptismal basins, a teapot, and a cream jug have survived. His flatware, including teaspoons, tablespoons, and this ladle, are equally well fabricated and finished.85
