Elliot is a important figure in the field of zoology. He helped found several insitutions and societies, including (along with Albert S. Bickmore) the American Museum of Natural History in New York in 1869, the Zoological Society of France (he also served as its vice-president), and the American Ornithologists' Union (also served as its president). In 1894, he was appointed curator of zoology at the Field Museum in Chicago.
